Indications / Uses:
Glimepiride is used to help control blood sugar in adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus when diet, exercise, and weight management alone are not enough. It works by helping the pancreas produce more insulin, which lowers blood sugar levels.
Dosage/Directions for use:
Adults with Type 2 Diabetes: Start with 1 mg once daily. The dose may be gradually adjusted based on blood sugar levels. The usual dose is 1–4 mg once daily, with a maximum of 8 mg per day. Use the lowest effective dose as prescribed by a healthcare professional.
Children and adolescents below 18 years: Not generally recommended due to limited safety and effectiveness information.
Administration: Glimepiride is administered orally and should be taken with food, preferably shortly before or during the first main meal of the day, to help reduce the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).
Contraindications:
Glimepiride should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to glimepiride, other sulfonylureas, sulfonamide derivatives, or any component of the formulation. It is contraindicated in patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketoacidosis, diabetic pre-coma, or diabetic coma. Use should also be avoided in individuals with severe kidney impairment or severe liver dysfunction, as these conditions may increase the risk of adverse effects and affect the safe use of the medication.
