Indications / Uses:
It is indicated for the long-term management and prevention of angina pectoris (chest pain) caused by coronary artery disease. It is also used as part of the treatment plan for severe chronic heart failure. Isosorbide dinitrate belongs to the nitrate class of vasodilator medications and works by relaxing and widening blood vessels, which improves blood circulation and reduces the workload placed on the heart. This action helps decrease the frequency and severity of angina attacks and supports improved cardiac function in patients with chronic heart conditions.
Dosage/Directions for use:
Adults – Oral Tablet for Angina Prevention: Start with 5–20 mg, 2–3 times daily. The dose may be adjusted to 10–40 mg, 2–3 times daily, depending on response.
Adults – Sublingual Tablet for Acute Angina: Take 2.5–5 mg as needed for quick relief or before physical activity that may trigger angina.
Adults – Chronic Heart Failure: Take 40–160 mg per day in divided doses. Maximum: 240 mg per day.
Administration: Isosorbide dinitrate is administered orally or sublingually depending on the formulation. Oral tablets should be taken as prescribed, while sublingual tablets should be placed under the tongue and allowed to dissolve for faster absorption. Do not swallow sublingual tablets whole. Patients should follow the prescribed dosing schedule carefully and avoid sudden discontinuation unless advised by a healthcare professional. Regular monitoring may be required to ensure safe and effective treatment.
Contraindications: Isosorbide Dinitrate should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity or allergy to nitrates or any component of the formulation.
